    We’ve done our fair share of research, and we’ve come up with what we believe are the most effective ways to stay sharp and awake for as long as possible, without sleep deprivation or torturing yourself in any way, shape or form.

    Walk or do something physical

    Stretching your legs now and then will help you stay away from bed for a long time. Whether you’re working, studying, or simply lounging in front of the TV – just get up and do something physical. Do a couple of pushups or situps, or simply walk around for a few minutes, get your blood pumping, and you’ll feel tiredness floating away.

    Take a nap

    Take a nap when you feel sleepy – it’s not the end of the world if you do. However, keep your naps brief. Sleeping for three hours during the afternoon is not a nap. If you’re willing, try adding a 20-minute coffee nap to your everyday routine. Coffee naps could save you time and bring forth some great results.

    Eat only healthy food and snacks

    Contrary to popular belief, healthy foods and snacks can boost energy. Sugary snacks and energy drinks could give you a quick energy boost, but once the sugar-high wears off – you’ll crash. So, boost your energy levels with healthy snacks and foods like yoghurt, nuts, fresh fruit, baby carrots etc.

    Have a conversation to occupy your mind

    Silence aids sleep, so whenever you feel like you’re dozing off – spark up a conversation. Talking, gesturing, and even thinking about what you want to say next will help you battle sleepiness, keeping you awake for quite some time. If you’re alone and don’t have anyone to talk to – talk to yourself. It’s not like anyone’s going to hear you.

    Turn on the lights

    Sleeping with a bright light on is quite troublesome, so turn on the lights if you find yourself having a hard time keeping your eyes open. Open up the curtains, fire up the TV, or just expose yourself to any source of bright or blue light, and you should be able to wake yourself up a bit.

    Deep breathe

    Deep breathing exercises can help you wake up even when you’re at your drowsiest. Simply take deep and controlled in-and-out breaths. This will slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, and improve circulation, ultimately aiding mental performance and energy.

    And, if you want to take it a step further, there’s a technique called “stimulating breath”, which many yogis swear upon, so if you want to put movement and deep breathing together for better results – you can.

    Work on different tasks

    Staying focused on a single task for a long time is bound to become dull and monotonous, which will inevitably have you feeling sleepy – a problem many night shift workers often experience.

    More engaging work responsibilities are bound to make you feel awake. So, in order to wake yourself up, try and switch your focus every now and then. Start working on different, more stimulating tasks to keep your mind engaged.

    Close your eyes to take a short break

    This might be a roller coaster, but you could try closing your eyes and giving them a break every once in a while to avoid fatigue. Continuous fixation on a task at hand, especially the one on a computer screen, can lead to eye strain, tiredness, fatigue, and all other sorts of sleep-inducing problems. So, if you can stay disciplined and not doze off – close your eyes for a bit and take a little break.

    Drink enough water

    Staying hydrated will not only help you stay awake naturally, but it will also help you feel better. A glass of cold water will be refreshing and rejuvenating, helping you fight off fatigue and sleepiness. Essentially, as long as you drink enough water – you should be good. You don’t have to drink plenty – just eight to ten glasses of water should do the trick.

    Exercise regularly

    Exercising regularly will not only help you stay awake, but it will also help you fall asleep and stay asleep for up to eight hours each night. Even walking pumps oxygen through your body, helping you stay alert and focused for hours, so you can only imagine what proper exercising can do.

    As a cherry on top, tiring yourself out during the day will help instil better sleep habits. Since you’ll have to go to bed earlier, you’ll be able to get a good night’s sleep each night, allowing you to effortlessly stay awake during the day.

    Drink coffee

    Consuming caffeine is a known remedy for excessive sleepiness, and there’s a good reason for it. Effects of coffee and other caffeinated drinks have been researched and medically reviewed many times, and it has been proven, time and time over, that unless you’re suffering from an underlying sleep disorder – a cup of coffee will give you a buzz and help you stay awake.

    Just make sure you don’t drink it too late in the evening, or it’ll probably disrupt your sleep-wake cycle.

    Have a late-night snack

    We’re usually against a late-night snack, but if you’re one of the night-shift workers that need to stay alert throughout the night – a healthy snack could help you achieve that. Eat a handful of nuts, eat some yoghurt with fresh fruit or berries, or grab a low-carb protein bar. As long as you don’t stuff yourself full of sugar or energy drinks – night shifts shouldn’t be too hard for you to handle.
