What to look for when buying a dog bed?

An image of a brown Pomeranian in a dog bed.

Like we said a moment ago, we’ll teach you how to choose the best dog bed, and not just anyone at their word when they say that their bed is the best one out there.

The first, and arguably the only thing you have to know, is what to look for in puppy/dog beds.

On that note, let's further explore what exactly to look for and consider when buying a dog bed.

Material

Choosing the right material for a dog bed is essential for many different reasons. Naturally, you’ll want your pup to be nice and cosy, but also, you’ll want to find a bed that won’t be a nightmare to keep clean. Also, it would be nice if you could get one that won’t tear after a month. After all, a pet bed shouldn't be a monthly expense, regardless of how much you love your four-legged friend!

Your best option is probably polyester. A synthetic fabric like polyester is easy to keep clean, is usually machine-washable, is fairly durable, and it won't cause your pet to overheat come summertime.

However, you could also go with faux fur or faux leather, if you’re looking for something a bit fancier. Although, keep in mind, faux fur will be a nightmare to keep clean, so think that one through.

Finally, suede, vinyl, and microfibre are also viable choices, with each of them coming with their own sets of pros and cons you’ll have to weigh out. But let's take a closer look at each one of these materials. But they're quire rare so we'll skip them for now.

Polyester

As you've probably noticed, polyester is quite a frequent material when making a dog's bed. However, just because it's common, doesn't mean that it isn't good. After all, even the best dog bed on our list utilises polyester!

This is quite a departure when looking at our own beds or pillows, where natural materials are usually necessary to make the product be the best of the best. However, polyester has everything your four-legged friend needs!

It's easy to wash, so, you don't have to worry about stains as much. Plus, it's rather durable. And this is a big plus if your furry friend likes to bite down on their comfy bed.

Lastly, it's rather cheap, even when you're getting a large dog bed. The only downsides to polyuester are that it's not that fancy and it's not always waterproof. But it's still an excellent choice for most standard dog beds.

Foam

Foam is also rather common when making dog's beds as it's the king of pressure relief. Just like with a human memory foam mattress, foam dog beds support your friend and dampen some aches. So, it's a common choice for dog breeds that are more susceptible to injuries and joint pain, as well as older dogs.

Some memory foam beds even have a “pillow” of sorts that can give added support to the dog's neck. The only downside is that, just like a regular memory foam mattress, foam dog beds are a bit more difficult to clean.

Faux fur / faux leather

If you think that the best dog bed needs to look like a proper luxury dog bed, both faux fur and faux leather could be good options. Even for a dog's bed, these two materials look rather elegant and certain types of room decor would likely benefit from these kinds of dog beds.

However, when it comes to performance, it's a mixed bag. On the one hand, faux leather is rather simple. You can usually just wipe the dog's bed down with a wet cloth and be done with it. You might even mind a waterproof dog bed that uses faux leather.

On the other hand, faux fur is a bit more complicated. It's hardly ever going to be in the waterproof dog bed section and even hand washing can be a nightmare. So, while it makes for an excellent luxury dog bed, know that it will require more time and care.

The style of the bed

An image of a small dog in a donut dog bed

There are about a dozen different dog beds in terms of style, with the most popular ones being pillow or cushion, donut, sofa, cave, and raised beds. And which of these will make for the best dog bed depends on the dog breed as well as what you're looking for.

Pillow or cushion beds are the most popular for two reasons – they’re versatile and they’re affordable. They can be small or large, so they’ll find just about any dog out there. Also, they might work well with raised beds, if you get a raised bed frame, instead of an entire bed.

Donut beds are also a popular choice. They’re as comfy and versatile as cushion beds, with the exception of having slightly raised edges, allowing your furry little friend to rest their head while they nap.

Sofa beds are pretty self-explanatory, as they’re just miniature sofa beds or dog bed with sides, there to help you keep your pet off of your sofa. But, let’s be honest – they probably won’t help do that. You’ll still have to scooch over to make room for your doggo on the regular sofa.

Finally, cave beds are something you don't see all too often, but many dogs really like them. They're sort of like an anti-anxiety bed for your pet, allowing them to hide in their little nest whenever they want to.

Size & dimensions

As a general rule of thumb, you'll want to find a dog bed that's big enough for your dog. There are no two ways about it. Take a look at how your pet sleeps, and figure out which size of the bed will be the best for them.

If they like to curl up – get them something snug and cosy. If they like to spread out or sleep on their back – get them a spacious bed. It’s that simple.

And generally it's better to go over than under. The best dog bed is still going to be the best even if it's bigger than it needs to be. However, if the dog's bed is smaller than the dog, it won't be able to keep your dog comfortable. Plus, there the issues of elevation.

Elevation

While not too common, some dog beds are made so that the dog's bed is elevated a bit off the ground. But what is the point of an elevated dog bed? Well, the main benefit is that it help the dog's bed stay cool. Since there's space underneat the dog's bed for hot air to escape, an elevated dog bed typically won't get too hot.

Secondly, it's more hygienic. Since the dog's bed isn't on the ground, it's a lot easier to prevent an accumulation of dust or any other nasty particles. But likely the most important benefit of an elevated dog bed, at least if you ask your four legged friend, is that it offers more orthopaedic support.

So, the best elevated dog beds might just take off the pressure off your dog's joints! However, do note that regular dog beds can also offer head and neck support. Plus, older dogs might have trouble getting on an elevated dog bed. So, it's not like an elevated dog bed is necessarily the best dog bed on the market.

Comfort

Dog beds are all about comfort. There’s no denying that your pup could sleep on a blanket, but that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t or shouldn’t get them something a bit comfier. But that doesn't mean you have to get a luxury dog bed either.

As far as comfort’s concerned, cushion or donut beds are usually your best option. They’re comfy and supportive, and your dog will certainly find them very comfortable.

Also, if your dog is old and hurting a bit, buying them a nice, soft bed to relieve some aches off of their joints would be wonderful. However, don’t get them anything too cushiony, as that might make it harder for them to go in and out of it. You can even specifically look an orthopaedic dog bed if you want to make sure your pup gets the appropriate head and neck support.

Purpose

The main purpose of a dog bed is rather simple – it's there for your dog to sleep in. However, it's worth taking a look at the bigger picture.

For instance, if you have a dog with a thick and long coat, you'll probably want to find them a bed that isn't too hot. Also, if your dog is old – you'll want to get them a low-profile, orthopaedic dog bed that's also pleasant on their joints, so they can easily get in and out of it. And if your dog is a known messy eater, look into getting a waterproof bed. Even a dog crate can be the ideal resting zone in some situations!

In other words, you don't have to spend a lot of money and buy a luxury dog bed for it to be the best. Just make sure it accomplishes what it needs to accomplish for your four legged friend to be happy and healthy!

Construction

Another thing to consider is the dog bed construction.

This is quite similar to the bed style, although not entirely. For example, if you need a bed for a small breed, you probably don’t have to worry about getting something too sturdy, or large. However, if you live with a large dog, like a German Shepherd, you’ll probably want to consider getting something a bit more durable. And we don't mean getting a dog crate – at least not without some type of mattress underneath.

Also, keep in mind that your dog will probably scratch and bite the bed, so try and get a bed that’s designed to withstand all of that. The last thing you’ll want to see is your dog’s new bed torn to pieces after a few days.

Orthopaedic properties

One of the most often overlooked features of a dog bed are its orthopaedic properties. However, quite a few dogs could benefit from an orthopaedic dog bed!

Generally speaking, old(er) dogs will need a soft, but supportive bed to soothe their aching joints, but that's not all there is to it. Your dog might injure itself, or they might undergo surgery, after which you will have to provide them with a comfier place to rest.

So, if your dog was sleeping in a cave bed or a sofa bed, you might want to consider temporary switching them to a pillow or a donut bed to make it easier for them. And if you do manage to find a proper orthopaedic dog bed for your canine, we'd advise you go for it!

After all, it's unfortunately going to grow old at some point, and it's better to have an orthopaedic dog bed sooner than later. And a dog crate will not help your furry friend stay comfortable later in life.

Is it waterproof?

For a lot of people, getting a waterproof bed is going to save them quite a few headaches. After all, it doesn't matter if it's a comfy bed with soft cushions if the dog immediately pees on and stains it! Not to mention that a waterproof bed also makes general maintenance a lot easier.

So, if your dog is a messy eater and/or isn't potty-trained, a waterproof water bed might be the best option for you. However, make sure that it's an actual waterproof bed and not just “stain resistant” or something similar.

Easy maintenance

Finally, you’ll have to consider maintenance.

This is something you’ll have to do both for yourself and your dog. Some materials are just easier to maintain than the others, and since we’re certain you don’t want your dog to sleep in a pile of filth, you’ll want to get them a dog bed that’s easily maintained.

Perhaps you'll look for a dog bed with removable β€œbedding” or one that's entirely machine-washable or even a dog bed that's just stain-resistant and easy to wipe clean. As we've mentioned, you can also get an elevated bed so there's less dirt underneath. Or even a waterproof dog bed so it's more difficult to stain. Whatever the case may be, make sure to get one that's easy to keep clean – both you and your dog will be better for it.

What is a calming dog bed?

It's easy to immediately understand what waterproof dog beds are. Or what an air dog bed is. However, a calming dog bed is a bit more tricky. After all, isn't any comfy bed going to be a calming bed? Well, not really. In fact, the best calming dog bed will usually have quite an intricate design.

And that's because it will utilise features we've already mentioned. For example, just like the best orthopaedic dog bed, the best calming dog bed is likely going to use high-quality memory foam. This makes sense, as joint pain isn't exactly calming.

However, the best calming dog bed will also have some unique features. For example, a calming dog bed will usually have slightly raised edges. And sometimes, it will even have completely upright walls! This is so that the dog feels more secure and protected.

So, calming beds aren't just memory foam beds with raised edges. At least, not in theory. After all, their entire design is to be as calming for the dog as possible.

Does your dog need a calming bed?

It can be difficult for pet owners to really know whether their dogs have issues with anxiety or not. And unlike with an otrhopaedic bed, not every night necessarily needs one. After all, every dog will become an older dog but not every pup will be a nervous dog.

From what we could fine, a calming dog bed can be very helpful if your dog has mild separation anxiety. However, more intense forms of anxiety could need a lot more than just a super soft filling. So, if your four-legged friend has more intense anxiety, don't just look into getting the best calming dog bed but rather seek out professional help as well.

Tips for buying and using a dog bed

Before we go and meet our picks for the best dog beds UK has to offer, we want to make sure we give you some tips for buying and using a dog bed.

First of all, you’ll want to do your research. It might seem like something insignificant at first, but trust us, if you do your due diligence and you research the product you’re interested in, there’s little to no chance you or your pet will end up dissatisfied with it.

Next up, you’ll want to start training your dog to use the puppy bed from as early as possible. Just like potty training, the best way to ensure your dog actually sleeps in their bed, not yours, is by teaching them early on that that is the place they’re meant to sleep in. The saying β€œyou can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is there for a reason. So, start them early!

Finally, you’ll want to make sure you keep the bed clean. We’ve already told you to look for an easy-maintenance bed, but that won’t really matter if you don’t put in the effort to actually keep the dog bed clean. Keeping the bed clean will prevent your dog from getting ill, and it’ll also ensure that your house doesn’t smell foul.

The advantages of owning a dog bed

Before we go and wrap this up, allow us to tell you just a little bit more about the dog beds. Better yet, allow us to present you with all the benefits both you and your dog will get to enjoy if you buy your pup a bed.

Both younger and older dogs will benefit from a comfortable bed. Puppies will develop better, and the old dogs will get to soothe their age-related aches. The best bed for puppy will also be a best dog bed for a small dog.

There’s no magic one-size-fits-all dog bed. The best bed for your dog will be the one that matches their needs, size, habits and more. Whether you go for luxury dog beds or some other dog beds, do know that you dog has to try it before he likes it.

Do dogs prefer beds with sides?

Most of them do, but not all of them. Some dogs prefer to rest their head on the side of the bed, while others prefer to snuggle up against it, but it’s all individual.

Should dogs sleep on soft or firm beds?

Neither. Finding a perfect balance between support and comfort is essential, especially for a large or an old dog. Just try to avoid plastic dog beds.

How often should I change dog bed?

Most dog beds should be cleaned once a week. As for changing the entire bed, you could probably get years of use out of a high-quality dog bed.

Where should I place a dog bed?

Most people keep dog beds close their own beds, especially when the dog is a puppy. However, any place where your dog usually likes to chill out and relax is a good place for a bed.

Should I keep a dog bed close to my bed?

Sure. You can keep the dog bed as close to your bed as you want – as long as your dog likes spending its time there.

As a CPD certified Sleep Consultant I know how important sleep is. And as a combination sleeper, I have found it difficult to get products to suit my sleep style. I have more than 2 years product testing experience with The Sleep Advisors which means I have slept on, with and under more than 500 products with varying degrees of success. This is added to more than 2 years experience as a product reviewer for Closer, Heat and Grazia magazines, so I've got a rigorous process. I love sharing my sleep testimonials with our readers and hearing their experiences too.
