Many people find themselves struggling with being hot sleepers and find they can’t get into a deep sleep. As The Sleep Advisors, we wanted to put Emma’s Luxe Cooling Mattress to the test to see if this could be the one to improve your sleep. 

With memory foam mattresses, they tend to retain heat but this one claims to adjust to your body temperature. We’ve been impressed with other Emma mattresses so we will discuss how the Luxe Cooling mattress compares to them.

Who is this product for?

If you’re prone to night sweats, you’ve probably guessed that this cooling mattress is for you. It’s specifically designed with you in mind. This Emma mattress can be suitable for most sleepers, but most definitely anyone who sleeps on their side.

It’s one of the best I’ve tried for this sleep position. I would definitely say it favours comfort over support – that’s not to say there is no support from this one.

What do we use this product for?

The Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress has breathable properties which is ideal for keeping your body heat to a minimum. It’s also great for a comfortable sleep surface with a soft touch cover. It has the right amount of sink-in softness that you’ll feel your shoulders, hips and knees line up in the correct position.

Does the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress come in different versions?

With the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress, there's a choice of two. You can either get the standard version or the Plus version. The distinction between the two is the mattress cover you will receive on your mattress.

There is the option of a standard cover or a comfort cover, depending on whether you purchase the standard or Plus version of the mattress. However, the structure of the mattress remains the same in both. There is only a small difference in the prices so it comes down to your preference.

Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress

This version includes the standard breathable cover which is simple, yet soft to the touch and gentle on your skin. It's a great addition to the mattress in order to keep it fresh and clean. The cover is machine washable and hypoallergenic so there should be no concerns for allergy sufferers.

Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress Plus

We received the Plus version which has an upgraded comfort cover. You'll experience the same benefits as the standard cover but with more. It gives extra thickness and plushness, as well as being softer and more durable. So, if you want a little more comfort then it’s worth opting for this one.

Being a cooling mattress, you are going to expect to have some carefully designed features to achieve this selling point. As well as this, you will want all the usual benefits from a mattress – whether that's comfort and/or support and extra details.

Here is a pick of a few important elements.

Review of the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress

The Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress is a huge upgrade from the Emma Original Mattress. The obvious update is the cooling properties but the overall structure has changed for the better. This mattress is a hybrid model with memory foam and pocket springs.

As for the cover of the Luxe Cooling Mattress, I found it really simple to remove with the zip spanning the whole way around. Unzip it completely, take it off and pop it in the wash – it’s that easy. The zip can be found halfway down the mattress and is easy to find along the green strip.

Now onto materials that can change the whole experience of a product. Being named a Luxe Cooling mattress you would expect excellent breathability throughout the mattress. So, is this something Emma has actually managed to do? Let’s start from the top layer and work our way down to see how they have achieved a cooling mattress.

The top cover uses open-pore fibres which take and release air back to you. This helps to regulate your temperature and, in turn, keeps you cool through the night. This layer is followed by their ThermoSync Technology which we mentioned earlier – the graphite-infused foam layer that absorbs excess body heat to keep you at an ideal temperature. Next, is the Halo Memory Foam layer that can also be found in Emma’s NextGen Mattress. While it contours to your body shape, it is also very breathable too. Lastly, there’s an Aeroflex pocket springs layer that is deep enough to encourage breathability further into the mattress.

What we like about the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress

There's a lot to like about the Emma Luxe Mattress but we've narrowed it down to our three favourite things that you should take into consideration when looking to purchase your new mattress. Breathability is the main factor but here are a few more:

• The best mattress I have found for side sleepers, it was immediately comfortable for me to lie. Aside from side sleepers, it is suitable for other sleeping positions. I loved that it was quick to return to its original shape which meant it was ideal for combination sleepers, like myself.
• The two vertical handles that are on both long edges of the mattress are useful for the usability. This can make the manoeuvrability easier – you just need someone on each side to lift in smoothly. But we probably should mention while the idea of the handles is great, I did manage to rip one while lifting it onto the bed…  maybe I just don't know my own strength.
• You'll find there's little to no motion transfer with this mattress and it also provides edge-to-edge support. So, when you're sharing and end up nearer to the edge of the bed, you will still receive support. And if you're a light sleeper sharing with someone who is constantly changing their sleep position then you will hardly feel any movement so no more restless nights.

What we didn’t like about the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress

As much as we love this Emma mattress, there are a couple of downfalls to the product that we would like to discuss in a little more detail. Here are the negatives that stand out to us:

• Compared to other Emma mattresses, this one is a lot more expensive which reduces our overall rating of the product. Although it uses clever technology to keep it cool, I think it is a little overpriced.
• This mattress could be made more eco-friendly with the materials they use, but, it still uses polyester for the cover.

The common problems with the Luxe Cooling Mattress & how to solve them

One problem I had with the mattress was one of the handles tearing slightly when being lifted. It wasn't too major as the mattress could still be lifted but it's not the best. It was only a little tear and it didn't seem to get worse when lifted again. You won't be lifting the mattress all the time so it isn't a big deal and it won't change your sleep quality. 

To avoid this, I would say make sure there's at least one person either side of the mattress. Be careful when lifting and ensure you lift at the same time with just enough strength.

Emma's customer service and company information

Delivery – Free delivery is standard for all your orders and returns are free within the trial period. The delivery time can vary but you can usually expect it to be dispatched in a week, as I experienced.

From your order to the delivery, you'll have a tracking link, followed by a text of dispatch with a delivery date. Later, you will receive a time slot and a phone call on the day to say they're nearby. This helps to plan your day accordingly. It meant I could work before the mattress came and stop in time for its arrival. Once it was delivered to my front door, I could carry on with my working day.

Payment – They have the usual payment methods, as well as the option to use PayPal. Otherwise, you can opt for the DivideBuy scheme where you pay in instalments. It is great for those who would rather not pay out a large amount of money in one chunk or for less financial pressure with smaller chunks at a time.

What makes this product better than some other similar ones?

What makes this Emma mattress better than others is its ability to adapt to each individual so it doesn't matter if one of you gets hot in the night while the other is cooler. You'll both remain at an ideal body temperature. Another advantage that sets the bar high for other mattresses is it's an excellent mattress for side sleepers. They will find it extremely comfortable to lie on to improve spinal alignment and reduce joint pain every morning.

Is the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress eco-friendly or sustainable?

The Luxe Cooling Mattresses are not the most eco-friendly…

While they do have an old mattress removal service which is very useful and allows your old mattress to be fully recycled, there's a lot that could be better. Plus, it does mean paying out an extra £45.

• Polyester is a synthetic material, so it does not biodegrade. However, it can be recycled to make other plastic items such as clothes and packaging.
• Graphite is natural and a more eco-friendly option to additional chemicals, but it's a non-renewable source.

So, good – but not great!

How did we test the product?

Now, to discuss exactly how we test our products. After all, how can you trust our opinion on quality mattresses if you don't know how we got there? On the base level, all the products we review go through the following tests:

• Visual inspection
• Hands-on inspection
• Measured tests

When it comes to the Luxe Cooling Mattress, in particular, these are the tests conducted to gauge its quality:

• Looked for smaller details e.g. the zip and handles
• Found the key features to see how they worked
• Trialled different sleeping positions to see how it adjusted and retained shape
• Directly compared to other mattresses

Overall impressions of the product after the testing

To conclude our Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress review, we will give you an overview of the product and touch on any details we are yet to talk about.

Once I received this mattress, I couldn’t wait to see what it was like after knowing the quality of the other Emma mattresses. I started off by trialling different sleeping positions and found it suited all sleepers. It's a comfortable mattress with sink-in softness but I still felt supported from below. To top it off, if you’re a combination sleeper, like me, you’ll find this one practical to sleep on. The structure of the mattress is quick to bounce back so if you often change your sleeping position then the mattress will keep up with that.

We’re a fan of the Emma Premium mattress and this has a similar structure of six layers, however, this one has an even better cooling foam layer on top. If being a hot sleeper is one of the main things you want to have under control then it may be worth purchasing the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress.

And that’s not all, the Emma Luxe Cooling Mattress has little motion transfer which is great if you’re sharing with a partner. The good edge support in this mattress is similar to their Premium Mattress with the use of foam edging – giving solid edge-to-edge support.
