The Hypnia Essential Hybrid Mattress is suitable for all sleep positions, as long as you stick to just one position throughout the night. Each sleep position will find it supports the pressure points for spinal alignment. It's great for those who are looking for a fairly firm mattress but still allows them to sink into position.
Unlike memory foam mattresses with an even layer of support, this hybrid mattress has 5 different zones for optimal support. This mattress has good motion isolation which is ideal for those sharing with a fidgety sleeper.
It may be their essential mattress but it still has six layers for a complex structure. We are going to explain a few of the main features of the product that impact your sleep quality. From the quilted cover, down to the supportive cold foam layer.
Below the velvety and breathable cover, you will find the first foam layer. This is what Hypnia has classed as their premium foam layer. Where the other two memory foam layers are designed more for support, this one brings added comfort. It's a layer that can lightly relieve pressure depending on your sleep position so you're not straining on the pressure points. The foam also gives the mattress a top layer of softness that you slowly sink into as it hugs your body shape.
Below the premium layer, you will find the Zoned Foam. So, once you've experienced the softness, you'll be caught by the supportiveness underneath. This layer of the mattress works with the springs to create zoned support – hence the name choice. It has been designed to sink the shoulders and give more support to your lower back and hips. In turn, your spine will be aligned for a comfortable sleep.
Now for the springs that turn a memory foam mattress into a hybrid mattress. The Essential mattress uses pocket springs that are 14cm tall and are smaller than those in the Supreme Hybrid Mattress. There are 640 of them that are split into 5 ergonomic zones of support to target different areas of the body to keep you in an ideal sleep position.
I didn’t know what to expect when it came to trying out the Hypnia Essential Hybrid Mattress. When I initially sat on the mattress it felt as though it was super soft and I was just going to sink right down into it. However, when I lay down and my weight was distributed, it made me feel supported. It’s actually quite dense to lie on but you slowly sink to a comfortable position.
As a combination sleeper, I found it wasn’t as practical for me because it takes time to bounce back to its original shape. So, if you change your sleep position a lot throughout the night, it might be a little uncomfortable. If you want one that’s more suited to combination sleepers then we recommend taking a look at the Hypnia Supreme Memory Mattress.
Rather than making a long list of things we loved about this mattress, we have condensed it into a few of our top reasons for buying it. So, here are the positives:
Now, the not-so-good points of the mattress. These are the things that can be the deciding factor for some, including ourselves, but perhaps they are things that can be altered. Here are the negatives:
We have briefly mentioned some of the negatives of this Essential Hybrid Mattress, but the majority can be solved. It might just make things a little more awkward…
First up is the off-gassing. Whilst this isn't a big deal, it can make the unboxing a little unpleasant. The solution to this is leaving it to air out. Make sure there is good ventilation in the room and you'll forget the smell was even there.
Next is the lack of handles. Luckily, this is a lightweight mattress compared to others, otherwise, it could've been harder to lift. We would recommend that you have at least one person on either side of the mattress and lift carefully from underneath. It's even better that the mattress doesn't need to be turned all the time to keep it in the best shape, so once your mattress is in place, there's no other reason to lift it.
Lastly, the cover can be difficult to remove due to the fiddly zip and placement. To make things easier and reduce the amount of times you need to wash the cover, we suggest using a mattress protector and/or a fitted sheet. This will add another layer of protection so you can constantly keep it fresh.
Delivery – Ordering with Hypnia means free, fast and friendly delivery. When the mattress arrived, the driver delivered it to my room of choice and asked exactly where I wanted it to be left to reduce the lifting I had to do. It was a very efficient and helpful experience.
Payment – You can easily pay with the standard methods, but you also have the option to pay with PayPal. If none of these are suitable for you and you would prefer to pay in instalments, they have the choice of DivideBuy and Klarna.
Customer service – This was too good not to mention – on their online chat where you can ask any questions, they give you the option to play a game if you’re waiting more than a few minutes (during their working hours). Most of the time you get a quick reply and are super friendly but at least you know there’s a game to keep you entertained – like it did for me!
Looking for a new mattress can be a long process – deciding between a memory foam mattress and a hybrid mattress. Hypnia mattresses cover both of these options so if one doesn't suit you, it's likely that another one of theirs will.
If you like the idea of having a hybrid mattress but feel you need more from it than this one has to offer, then we would recommend looking at the Hypnia Supreme Hybrid Mattress instead. It has the same things to offer but better. Featuring a honeycomb foam for alignment and a latex layer to maintain your body temperature.

The mattress uses polyester which is great for durability and that's reflected in their warranty, but it does have a negative impact on the environment. Memory foam is not the worst material to use for the layers but there are better alternatives.
While the mattress itself might not be the most eco-friendly, the company does work with recycling operators so every returned mattress goes to a good home. They even have a refurbished mattress section where returned mattresses have been restored. Their mattresses are also manufactured with renewable energy.
Hypnia offers a 15-year warranty and 200-night trial period so you have plenty of time to test the mattress to see if it’s the one for you. And you can be sure that it’ll last you a long time without needing to be replaced.
It's easy for us to tell you our opinion on each product but it's always better to see how we got there. There are a handful of tests that take place in our reviewing process to give you our most honest thoughts. Here's exactly how we test our products:
To make things clearer, here's how we test the practicality of a mattress:
The mattress was delivered to my room in a cardboard box with the product vacuum-packed inside. When it came to unboxing the mattress, it was easy to do on my own. I was able to take the mattress out of the box and left it to expand. It took around a few hours to be ready to lie on, but it's definitely worth leaving it as long as possible to feel the full benefits.
One thing to note is that there are no handles on the mattress so lifting and moving it was a little tricky. The essential mattress does have a soft removable and washable cover which means maintenance is pretty straightforward. There’s a zip around two of the edges but I found the zipper to be quite small so it can be quite fiddly to unzip. These features might be necessary for some; if it is, then the Supreme Memory Mattress might be a better option.
Being a hybrid mattress, the structure combines memory foam with pocket springs sandwiched between. Due to the use of various foam layers, you may notice slight off-gassing when opening up your mattress. This is completely normal so just leave it in the room to air out for a little while and it will soon disperse.
All-in-all this is a basic mattress but it does the job. Every sleep position can comfortably drift off without lacking support – just remember it’s not ideal for those who move around in the night. If you’re not entirely sold on this Essential Mattress, then don’t worry, you have the choice of two other mattresses from Hypnia.
Hopefully, we have managed to answer a lot about this mattress in our review above. We have summarised a few of the burning questions that you may expect to see in Hypnia mattress reviews. However, if you have any other queries, then leave us a comment on this page and we will get back to you.
The Essential Hybrid Mattress is rated as a medium-firm mattress. More towards a firmer mattress, well, at least when you first lie on it.
Having a medium-firm feel makes it comfortable to sleep on but you will still find it supports all body types. For a reasonable price, you are getting a reasonably comfy feel.
This mattress is good for couples, thanks to the good motion isolation so you won't be affected by your partner's sleep habits. However, it's worth noting that the edge support is not the most practical if you're sharing. It might be worth looking at the Hypnia Supreme Hybrid Mattress instead.
