Every year, once spring comes around, we're faced with the challenge of storing our winter duvets until next year. So, let's discuss the best duvet storage ideas that can make your life a lot easier!

Although having a big fluffy duvet is nothing short of bliss during the winter, putting it away is a completely different story. After all, if you have limited storage space, storing bedding can be an absolute nightmare. And this gets even more difficult if you want your storage unit to look good as well!

So, today we're going to go over some duvet storage ideas that can hopefully make the entire process a bit easier. Some ideas might be better suited for some than others but we think everyone will find at least one they like. Plus, we'll go over a few tips to make the entire process a bit easier as well. So, let's begin!

Where should you store your bedding?

An image of a person storing their duvet

To start things off, we're just going to go over a few general storage ideas for where you can put your bedding away. Of course, not everyone will have all the items for every single tip so, we suggest utilising the one that works best for your situation.

We'll start by getting some of the more obvious bedding storage tips out of the way first and then move on to more specific examples. And once we're done, we'll go over some general tips that will make storing your bedding a lot easier in general!

In the linen closet

Of course, the most obvious place for linen storage is a linen closet. After all, that's their main purpose. And this comes with a few key advantages. For one, you can store your duvet, duvet covers, pillow covers, and even pillows all in one place. This means that you never have to wonder where you placed your down comforter as there will only be one place to look.

Secondly, linen closets are arguably the best in terms of aesthetics as well. After all, besides your linen, you usually store towels and other similar items in there. And since they're all typically monochrome and easy to arrange, you can make quite a nice display. Just make sure to place the duvet and pillows in the back, so that you can still reach your towels without knocking anything over.

Under your bed

Another obvious choice where you can store bedding is under your bed. It's out of the way and out of sight, so, it's ideal for storing items you don't need every day. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you decide to go for this option.

Firstly, make sure that the linen is well-protected. After all, even though there is a lot of empty space under your bed, it's also usually a bit dirty. So, getting plastic storage bags or some type of container to securely store your bedding is rather important. And we'll go over a few different options of storage options a bit later on. Also, if you have a pet, make sure that they can't get to the duvets. After all, the last thing you'd want is for your dog to accidentally puncture a hole and let dirt accumulate inside the bag/basket.

In your storage bed

If you have a divan bed, you can store comforters easily and efficiently. And in case you don't know what a divan bed is, just imagine a bed frame that also comes with all the storage space you'll ever need. Typically, they either come with drawers that you can use in order to sort your linen as you'd like, or a mechanism for lifting up the entire bed, which adds even more storage space. One of the best we would like to recommend is from Emma Sleep, which you can check on their bundle page.

Generally speaking, having the best storage bed makes for an easy storage solution. This even extends to other storage furniture, like storage tables and couches. After all, they usually stay relatively clean, keep your bedding safe from any playful dogs, and stay out of your way during the summer months.

In a storage basket

When it comes to long-term storage that also looks seamless, storage baskets are your best friend. After all, they come in all different shapes, sizes, and designs, meaning that you can tailor the look of your entire storage area. On top of that, they allow you to store items in a rather subtle way as a bunch of storage baskets are a lot more inconspicuous than a mountain of folded duvets.

Plus, they can make organising your closet a lot easier as you can label different baskets for different things. For example, one basket could be just for bed sheets while another is full of extra blankets. So, if you were looking into duvet cover storage ideas, this applies to that as well! And if you can get a decently-sized storage basket with a lid, you can even store your bedding in the open without it looking out of place.

In a vacuum bag

Getting the best vacuum sealer bags can make storing your bedding incredibly convenient. After all, in most cases, it results in your duvets only taking up around a third of the original space. And if you have limited storage space, this can be a lifesaver. Plus, it can even help keep things well-organised!

This is because you can now get tote bags that double as vacuum bags. So, you get all of the benefits of a storage basket while also significantly cutting down on the space they take up. So, as far as storage tips are concerned, this one is among our favourites. That being said, vacuum packing is a bit more complicated when it comes to a down comforter and other bedding that utilise down. But we'll cover that in the tips section of the article.

In some cases, you can also use regular duvet storage bags and just manually let the air out. However, it's worth noting that this likely won't be as effective as getting a proper vacuum bag. After all, vacuum storage bags for duvets are made with the explicit purpose of making the duvet as compact as possible and not letting out any air.

In a suitcase or bag

If you want to save space, duvets aren't your only enemy. After all, most suitcases take up just as much space if not more! So, why not combine the two and make the entire ordeal a bit more bearable? After all, most larger suitcases can fit a winter duvet and since they're also rather secure, you can comfortably put them under the bed.

Plus, if you also use a vacuum bag, you could potentially fit a few more items in the suitcase, thus creating extra space in your closet. As you can see, you can combine quite a few of the tips we've already mentioned in order to ensure your duvet takes up less space and stays protected.

In a bin bag

While bin bags are not nearly as pretty as storage boxes or as effective as vacuum bags, they can still be useful in a pinch. After all, as long as you're careful, you can push out all excess air and seal the bag so that it takes up as little space as possible.

Plus, bin bags are typically sturdy, so they should protect your bedding from any dust or dirt accumulation. And if you store your bedding somewhere out of sight, like in a guest room, it doesn't really matter how they look. So, it's definitely a viable option for some!

Tips for storing your bedding

An image of a woman airing out her bedding

As promised now that we have gone over where you can store your bedding, let's move on to some practical tips on how you should do it! After all, having the best winter duvet usually isn't cheap. So, making sure that it stays protected and stays in prime condition for years to come is a goal we can all get behind.

And while some of these tips might seem obvious to you, others just might catch you off guard! But if you do know some other tips that we might've left out, be sure to leave them in the comments below.

Use dryer sheets

Although they're not as effective when it comes to seasonal storage, dryer sheets can keep your bedding fresh for quite a significant time. So, if you have to put your duvet away for a week or so, placing dryer sheets in between the folded layers can make it seem like it just got out of the washer!

And who doesn't love the feeling of fresh bedding? That being said, check the care label on your respective bedding products as some brands do discourage this practice. But more than likely, you should be fine.

Proper folding

You'd think that we'd all know how to properly fold our duvets after doing it every morning for the vast majority of our lives. However, there are a few little changes that could make the entire process a lot more efficient. For one, make sure to get all of the excess air out of the duvet before you start folding.

Secondly, consider rolling your duvet up instead of folding it into the usual rectangle package. This could make it a lot easier to store in the closet and will make it more easily accessible if it's near the front of the pile.

Make sure everything is dry

Dry bedding is good bedding, and that's something you should always keep in mind. After all, excess moisture can damage your linen in a number of ways! From less tragic outcomes like a funky smell and mildew to the worst-case scenario, mould. No matter how you slice it, moisture can make it so that you have to throw away even your favourite bedding products.

So, what can you do? The easiest solution is to tumble-dry your bedding. However, not all duvets can be safely dried this way, so make sure you read the care label first. But things like sheet sets and pillowcases are likely to be safe for tumble-drying.

Secondly, utilise air drying. It's simple, effective, and surprisingly thorough. All you have to take note of is that you don't want all the filling to end up in one corner of the duvet. So, if you hang the duvet while it air dries, make sure to shake it up a bit before you put it away. And, make absolutely certain that the filling is completely dry – especially if you have a down duvet.

Take extra care of your down products

As we've alluded to a few times so far, down bedding products can be a lot more delicate than other bedding items. And since they're also usually more expensive, keeping them in pristine condition will always be in your interest.

So, here's what you should keep in mind. First off, don't be too harsh when folding. One of the main selling points of down duvets and comforters is the lift. But if you completely squash the duvet when folding, it can lose its fluffiness. The same goes for vacuum bags. However, if you do have to go down this route, make sure to re-fluff it every one or two weeks so that it doesn't become completely flat.

Secondly, make triple sure that the down is dry. As we've mentioned already, all bedding products need to be kept dry. But down products are by far the most delicate as the feathers and down can clump together. So, pay close attention to the care label and be absolutely certain that there's no excess moisture.

Use an acid-free box

While this isn't necessary for most people, it's an added layer of protection that can keep your bedding in tip-top condition. Usually used to store important documents, acid-free boxes excel at keeping whatever is inside untouched and unchanged. And as luck would have it, you can find acid-free boxes specifically made for bedding products! So, if you want an extra layer of protection, they make for quite a tempting choice.

Storing your bedding can be a headache. Duvets take up a lot of room and you want to make sure they don't get damaged during the summer months. However, with all of the tips we've provided, you should now have a pretty good idea of how to make the process a bit easier. So, just make sure to keep your bedding dry and fluffy, and utilise the space that you have to the fullest. And if you have any clever duvet storage ideas of your own, let us know in the comments!
