As is often the case with all-foam mattresses, we’d use Silentnight Studio Original to experience that cradling, sink-into-the-mattress feeling and get a good night’s sleep.
Since this is a moderately-priced product, we can’t really see this one being used as a guest-bed mattress, but more of a master bedroom, go-to mattress for both individuals and couples. In a nutshell, it is ideal for:
Silentnight Studio Original mattress used to exist in several iterations, with the main difference between them being a firmness rating. A while ago, that was changed, and a singular, medium-firm product was introduced, and that is the one we're reviewing today. So, we guess you could call it an upgraded version.
This Mattress has its own set of defining features that we want to talk to you about, so here you go.
A 3cm thick Geltex layer, which is a combination of an extremely elastic gel and breathable memory foam, has two main benefits – it keeps the mattress cool during the night, but it also makes it cosy and comfortable. The elastic nature of gel also provides some bounciness to the mattress, which is not something we often see in a memory foam mattress.
Underneath it, we have a 4cm layer made of premium memory foam, which has been designed to contour itself to your body and provide support where it’s most needed.
To make up for having a non-removable, non-machine-washable cover, Silentnight Studio Original mattress comes with a Purotex treated, knitted hypoallergenic cover.
While this doesn't make up for not being machine-washable, it does offer you peace of mind knowing that you'll be sleeping in a dust-mite-free, bacteria-free and allergen-free bed.
The Studio Original Mattress is 26 cm deep, which is right around what many would consider being ideal. It's tall enough to be comfortable on every bed frame while also being perfect for most fitted sheets and mattress protectors.
Aside from 7 cm of Geltex foam and regular memory foam, we have a bottom layer of high-density Studio Flex memory foam which is the main support layer of Silentnight Studio Original mattress. It is 19 cm deep and noticeably firmer than the rest of the layers, which is precisely what you'd expect from a high-density memory foam supportive base.
Unlike many other companies, Silentnight only offers a 60-night trial for their mattresses.
If you get it right, then this doesn't really matter. However, if you happen not to like your new mattress, you can see where this trial period comes up short.
First of all, it is significantly shorter compared to what the competition offers, but also, this is not a full-refund trial period, but an exchange sleep trial. What this means is, if you don’t happen to like Silentnight Studio Original Mattress, you have 60 days to exchange it for another mattress from Silentnight’s catalogue.
As we’ve mentioned earlier, this is a Purotex treated mattress, meaning it’s anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic.
To prove that this is not just a marketing ploy to get you to spend extra money, this claim is backed up with a certification from Allergy UK, meaning that this mattress is anti-allergy approved.
When you purchase Silentnight Studio Original mattress, you get a 5-year warranty that comes with it.
During those five years, the warranty will cover manufacturing defects and damages but will not cover natural wear and tear, user negligence, failure to maintain, and user inflicted damages to the mattress.
Also, as you know, five years is significantly less compared to what the competition offers, but then again, there's nothing you or we can do about it.
Now, for the review of the Studio Original mattress.
All in all, this is a solid mattress. There is nothing incredibly good or bad about it, which is evident by its relatively competitive pricing. This is your regular mid-range mattress that offers a good amount of support, comfort and everything else that goes along with it, but it doesn’t really excel at anything.
With that in mind, Studio by Silentnight mattresses offers a nice bit of support. Seeing how it is a medium-firm all-foam mattress, that shouldn't really be surprising. It’s objectively comfortable, offers a nice deal of motion isolation and soothing pressure relief, is hypoallergenic and dust mite-replant, and it doesn’t sink in the middle or around the edges.
On the other hand, you can probably find a mattress with a much better deal on trial and warranty, for starters.
Also, even though this one comes with a gel-infused memory foam layer, it still manages to get hot, so if that is something you generally struggle with – this one is not for you. Maybe go with a sprung mattress if get toasty?
On the bright side, this mattress seems rather durable, and we’re confident you’ll be able to use it beyond the warranty.
Overall, this is a solid mattress pretty much everyone will be able to enjoy. It hits all the right spots and struggles in the usual ways, so you know you won't be caught by surprise.
If we had to pinpoint up what makes Silentnight Studio Original mattress better than the rest of the similar products – we honestly couldn’t. As we’ve already said, this mattress is good, but it doesn’t excel at anything. So, we guess what makes this one better than the others is the fact that it is well-rounded and without major flaws.
We approach every single of these product reviews with the same goal in mind – to deliver you an objective review. In order to do so, we have to get our hands on the product and test it ourselves.
When it came to this particular product, we’ve simply ordered it online, and five days and one free delivery later – our new Single mattress was in the office, ready to be unpacked, tested and reviewed.
As you know, delivering an objective review isn't easy. A mattress feel is subjective, and what one person might find perfect, the other might find utterly horrible. What we do, in order to be objective, is have our team members each spend ten nights with the mattress, under different conditions, and have them write down their thoughts and impressions, which we'll later on dissect and have a discussion on.
This is not perfect, but then again, it's as close to being objective as possible since our reviewing team is diverse and has different sleeping preferences.
All in all, as you already know, this mattress has proven to be slightly above average in pretty much every category we pay attention to. It’s a B-minus across the board as far as we’re concerned, with only a few variations such as pressure relief and temperature regulation.
Finally, allow us to answer some questions about Original Silentnight Studio Mattress.
In a word – yes. It might not be as soft as some lightweight side sleepers would want it to be, but overall, it is a suitable mattress for side sleepers.
Yes. Back sleepers should have no problem sleeping on this foam mattress.
It depends. If you're average or lightweight, then yes, it would be suitable for you. On the other hand, if you're packing some extra pounds, you should look for something a bit firmer.
Having a non-removable cover limits your cleaning options to vacuuming or simply wiping the mattress with a damp cloth.
On average, we'd say this Silentnight mattress would last you around six, maybe seven years.
