Reviewer lying on the mattress as a side sleeper.

While most people don't usually associate mattresses with technology, the two are closer than you'd think! Our prime example is the HiGRID Premium Hybrid mattress.

The thing that makes this mattress stand out is an innovative grid system that can colapse or hold firm based on the pressure applied. In practice, this means that your hips and joints get to sink into the mattress, taking pressure off of these key areas, while the mattress stays firm along your back and limbs.

In other words, if you or your partner tend to wake up with aches all over, this mattress could be the start of something beautiful! Plus, the mattress still has all of the features that make for a great couples' mattress.

With complete motion isolation, good edge support, and a cover that's easy to take off and keep clean, you're getting a premium sleeping experience!

The Nectar memory foam mattress really pushes memory foam to its limits. At 25cm thick, it's a lot sturdier than most traditional memory foam mattresses on the market, while still being as comfortable as they come.

And it's an exceptionally good choice if you suffer from any kind of joint pain, as the mattress offers impressive pain relief and support, allowing your body to sink into the memory foam while cradling it from all sides.

Plus, this premium mattress was made to stick around! In fact, Nectar is so confident in the durability of their mattress that they offer a forever warranty.

So, if you want to sleep on a premium mattress for the rest of your life, this might be your lucky day!

What to consider when buying a mattress for couples UK

Whenever you're browsing new mattresses, you'll see a section that describes all the different features they might have. But that won't really help you unless you know exactly what to look for! So, let's go through all of the most important players, describe why they're important, and give suggestions on the best, top-rated mattresses that fit said description!

Motion transfer

An image of a couple on the floor.

This is probably the most obvious, and to some even the most important feature when looking for a good mattress for couples. This is because if you or your partner are light sleepers, you don't want to be woken up every time the other person moves a muscle.

Generally speaking, an innerspring mattress is rather likely to have such issues, as the springs disperse every motion throughout the rest of the mattress. At least when it comes to older or more budget-oriented models. If the springs are individually wrapped, then you're not likely to have such issues.

A memory foam mattress or a hybrid mattress on the other hand are much safer choices. They tend to have decent motion isolation, so any movement you do make will stay on your side of the bed. However, if we compare the Simba Luxe Hybrid and the Nectar Memory Foam mattress, we will see that these two types differ in other categories, such as comfort and usability. So, motion transfer alone shouldn't be the key factor.

And if you really don't want to feel a single disturbance, you can look into higher-end dual chamber air mattresses or even get two smaller mattresses and fit them inside a bigger bed frame.

If you want to learn all the ways you can reduce motion transfer, you can read our reducing motion transfer guide. Not only will it help you make the correct choice when buying a new mattress, but it can also give you some ideas on how to fix your current issues.

Support

An image of a couple sleeping on Dormeo Octaspring Classic mattress topper.

Getting a mattress with good support is generally very important, for couples and single sleepers alike. This is because a mattress that can adequately support your body will keep your spine aligned and take away some of the stress placed upon your joints and hip.

Because even the comfiest mattress is going to feel disappointing if your back is aching every morning. So, the best mattress for sleeping couples has to take care of the health of both parties involved! Generally speaking, you want to avoid mattresses that you completely sink into.

For example, an all-foam mattress that immediately gives way when you lay on it is probably not the most ideal choice. But that doesn't mean you have to go for an extremely hard mattress either.

Hybrid mattresses are usually better in this regard than memory foam mattresses, but it can vary case by case. For example, when comparing the Hypnia Supreme and the Emma Luxe, we can see that the Hypnia Supreme is definitely softer but doesn't actually lag behind in terms of its overall score.

And if you do end up getting a mattress that doesn't completely support you and your partner, we suggest getting a good mattress topper that can even things out. These are our personal favourite picks for mattress toppers that alleviate back pain.

Size

Although cuddling up in bed is one of the best parts of being a couple, you should think about the long term as well. This is because certain issues can arise over time if the mattress is too small to comfortably fit two people.

For example, a Small Double or Queen size mattress might be ideal in the beginning. You save some money, it doesn't take up as much space, and everything is perfect. But then summer rolls around and you find yourself overheating. Or one of you is kept awake all night because the other keeps changing their sleeping position. And things are only made worse if you also have a pet that likes to get into bed with the two of you.

So, getting a mattress that's a bit bigger can save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Of course, the bigger the better, but you don't have to break the bank either. We suggest getting a Double at the very least. And if all of these mattress sizes seem confusing to you, check out our guide for all mattress sizes. This will also guarantee that you get the appropriate size for your bed frame, as the last thing you want is a mattress moving around during the night.

An infographic showing the standard mattress and bed sizes in the UK

Firmness

A hand pressing a mattress

Now let's talk about firmness as it's a key player when it comes to comfort. When it comes to firmness, most mattresses opt for the medium firm feel, as it's the most standard. However, depending on you and your partner, you might need to look around a bit more.

There are two main questions you need to ask yourself: what are your sleeping positions and how heavy are you and your partner? This is because some sleeping positions are inherently better for certain firmness levels. For example, if both you and your partner sleep on your stomach, a slightly firmer mattress is ideal – both innerspring mattresses and hybrids would do the trick. However, if you're on the heavier side, a firm mattress might feel a bit uncomfortable.

And if you sleep on your side, the opposite is true – with memory foam mattresses being more likely to suit your needs, as you don't want your hip pressing on a hard surface. And if you want to learn more about mattress firmness and how you can manipulate it a bit, check out our guide on how to make a mattress firmer.

Lastly, if all else fails, you could look into getting a dual mattress. Dual mattresses are ideal for couples in bed who have different sleeping preferences, as you can independently change the firmness level on your side of the mattress. Be warned, however, as this type of luxury isn't going to be cheap!

Edge support

a couple buying a hybrid mattress

Edge support is one of those features that you might overlook but it can make or break your sleeping experience. This is because it greatly influences what percentage of the mattress you can effectively sleep on.

So, if you opted for a smaller mattress, let's say a Small Double, good edge support is essential – as it lets you sleep near the edge of the mattress without the fear of falling off in the middle of the night. And even if you have a bigger mattress, it's still a very important feature if you tend to roll around in your sleep.

Therefore, if you want the best mattress for couples, make sure to look for a mattress with good edge support! And if you don't know where to start, you can always check out our selection of best mattresses with edge support.

Temperature regulating

a woman sleeps in a bed with the optimal room temperature

Temperature regulation is also a key factor when getting the best mattress for sleeping couples as no one wants to feel like they're in a furnace while trying to sleep. And let's just say that there's a lot to discuss when it comes to temperature regulation.

First off, let's talk about mattress types, as different types of mattresses deal with temperature regulation in slightly different ways. For example, more often than not, a memory foam mattress is going to have some issues when it comes to overheating. Foam is pretty dense and since you also sink into it, your body heat doesn't have anywhere to go.

And when you multiply that effect by two, some issues can arise. However, that's not always the case. If you don't care about the price and want the very best memory foam mattress on the market, you're likely to get cooling gel memory foam or some other method of cooling down.

So, if we compare a cheaper mattress, like the Emma Original, to it's big brother, the Emma Luxe Cooling, we can see that one definitely outshines the other in terms of breathability. This is because it utilises treated foam instead of the standard memory foam.

Innerspring mattresses and hybrids are a bit safer, but you still need to do your due diligence and be informed, especially if you sleep hot. So, looking into a good bed frame base, a breathable duvet and a well-ventilated room is still pretty important.

Overall, we generally advise staying away from memory foam if you and your partner are hot sleepers, but there will always be exceptions. For more information, check out our picks for the best memory foam mattresses.

Durability

an image of a couple trying out a new mattress

Wear and tear are as inescapable as paying taxes, and it's something you should keep in mind before committing to a purchase. This is because a mattress does go through pretty noticeable changes during its lifespan.

For example, you could've gotten a mattress with a medium-firm feel only to now notice that you completely sink into it. Or that the memory foam mattress you got is now a slightly different colour than when you bought it. But how can you counteract such things? Realistically you can't, however, you can make the process a lot easier for yourself.

First off, know that high-quality mattresses made from premium materials will typically last a lot longer. So, even though they're more expensive, you'll also have them for a significantly longer period of time.

Secondly, always check out the warranty on the mattress. The industry standard is 10 years for a medium-to-high-end mattress but there are better deals out there. Believe it or not, if you get a Dreamcloud mattress, for example, you'll actually get a lifetime warranty! So, even though it's a bit pricy when compared to other mattresses, it'll pay itself off in the long run.

And if you haven't looked into mattress durability before, or you just want to read up on what to look out for, we have a helpful guide on how often a mattress should be changed.
